The import duties apply to the customs value declared by the importer. The Customs Duties on Imports (DAI) are contained in the Central American Tariff System (SAC), which contains the tax rates applicable to goods imported into the Guatemalan Territory, ranging from 0% to 20%. In addition, the VAT credit can be claimed by those taxpayers who have a high percentage of sales to entities exempt from VAT. The refund of VAT credit corresponds to exporter taxpayers who cannot offset the VAT credit with VAT debits. The VAT credit can be claimed on monthly, quarterly, or semiannual tax periods. The amount payable to the Superintendencia de Administración Tributaria (SAT), Guatemala’s tax authority, is the difference between the debits and credits accrued during the tax period (one month) and is paid monthly by filing a tax return in the calendar month following the end of each tax period.

The taxable amount on the sale of goods includes the sales price, less any discounts provided under sound commercial practices, plus other charges shown on the invoice. If there's anyone I can sit down and talk with about these problems, I would greatly appreciate it.A 12% VAT is levied on the sale or transfer of merchandise and on non-personal services rendered or effected in Guatemala. What I'm looking for is an English speaking customs broker or, at the least, an experienced broker who isn't going to jerk us around with unreasonable claims and can handle SAT so we stop getting ridiculous taxes. I understand SAT is it's own type of problem, but we fully follow all international trade laws, fully conform to the CAFTA on all invoices and customs practices, and always honestly value our products based on what we paid for them. Recently, however, she has been making claims that we don't have the proper invoices, we undervalue our products, and she has been unable to get us fairly taxed by SAT. That was fine because we never had any problems like the ones we're having lately. We think our biggest problem is we lack an English speaking customs broker. We have been in business around 2 years, and lately have been running into some ridiculous obstacles. My company imports goods from the US via ocean freight to sell in stores located around Guatemala.
